The Story

The ovens at Marigold Bakery wake up at 3:40 every morning, and so does Elena. She is thirty-one, sings off-key while the bread rises, and has a landlord’s letter on the counter and a mother who is starting to forget her name.

Every morning, a quiet man in a dark coat sits on the bench at the end of the pier. Elena starts leaving him bread. Then she finds a used copy of Persuasion in the little library box, with notes in the margins in neat blue ink, and starts writing back.

She doesn’t know his name. She doesn’t know he works nights. She only knows that someone out there reads the same pages she does, and answers.

First love story in three books.
